Economic Importance of Forestry and Forest Products to Mississippi Counties

Type: Nomination of a group, possibly including the nominator

Category: Educational Material - Short Publication

Forestry is a 17.4 billion dollar industry in Mississippi, and in 2006 forestry related employment accounted for 8.5% of all jobs in Mississippi. While the economic contribution of forestry at the state level is well documented, information on the importance of forestry to Mississippi counties was not readily available. Such information would be very helpful to county level Extension personnel and county forestry associations that seek to support and promote forestry in their respective counties. To meet this need a new publication series was produced and published for each Mississippi county. These fact sheets will be useful when local forestry communities seek support from state and local governments or in demonstrating how actions damaging to forestry (e.g., logging restrictions) can result in harm to the local economy. The new publication series will greatly enhance the ability of county Extension personnel in their efforts to educate local government officials and other interested parties about the importance of forestry to their local economy. Information is provided on the number of jobs and the dollar value of total output, value added, and wages and salaries within each county that are a result of economic activity by the forestry and forest products industry. These estimates were produced using the economic impact analysis methodology. Also included in the publication series is information on the number of forested acres, forestland owners, and forestry related tax collections for each county. A short publication was produced for each of Mississippi’s primarily forested counties resulting in 70 publications with a printing of 40 copies for each county. (Attached are a few of the publications form the series)

Economic Importance of Forestry and Forest Products to Adams County. This new publication series reports the economic impact of Mississippi’s forestry and forest product sectors by county. Given the recent economic decline and hardships faced by many in the forestry community there are numerous efforts at the county level to promote forestry and educate the public on the economic importance of forestry and forest products to the county economy. County level economic input-output analyses were conducted using IMPLAN software and data. This approach estimates how spending by one sector of the economy generates activity across other sectors of the economy. As goods and services are purchased from supporting sectors in the local economy by forestry and forest products industry this generates economic activity for these supporting sectors. Also, the employees of both the forestry and forest products industries and their supporting sectors also buy and spend in the local economy. Quantifying the total amount of economic activity can allow for a greater appreciation of the importance of forestry and forest products to a county’s economy. This new publication series will be useful to local forestry communities seeking support from state and local governments or in demonstrating how actions damaging to forestry or forest products can result in harm to the local economy. On the last page of the brochure is some additional information that includes forestland ownership and acreage obtained from the MIFI Dynamic Report Generator software, estimated value of both standing and harvested timber, and estimated tax collections originating from timberland and timber harvesting.
