Northland NEMO Watershed Game Train-the-Trainer Program
Type: Nomination of a group, possibly including the nominator
Category: Achievement - Innovative Program
This team of Extension Educators created an innovative program to address the needs to train other educators, watershed professionals, and other resource managers in the very popular and effective Northland NEMO Watershed Game (WSG) tool. The WSG was redesigned and created in 2009 with the primary audience of adult local decision makers and community leaders. This team responded to the increasing demands for watershed education and decreasing capacity of many Extension and Sea Grant units by developing a train-the-trainer model for the WSG. Realizing that the team could not lead the WSG in every portion of the State or the nation, they developed a workshop that would lead to an 'army' of capable, knowledgeable, and trained WSG Facilitators that could greatly expand the use of the tool. This innovative approach has been implemented four times by the Team. The results have been extremely promising. Close to 60 have taken part in the WSG train-the-trainer program to date. More importantly, on an average over 85% of the trainees left with confidence they were ready to lead the WSG with the primary audience as a result of the program. Approximately 50% have used the WSG within the first year of receiving training. The innovation also included creating a network of colleagues or WSG Facilitators who could co-lead with each other and lean on each other for support as needed. This network also provides for input for constantly improving the tool from feedback and reporting mechanisms trainees are required to participate in.
The WSG Train-the-Trainer program is innovative because it reflects the often desired outcome from train-the-trainer programs; increase capacity, empower participants, and expand the reach of programming. The success of the model can be implemented by other programs. Ultimately, the WSG Train-the-Trainer innovation will improve the knowledge of local leaders in watershed management and lead to more informed decisions and recommendations.
