Idaho-Washington Forest Owners Field Day
Type: Nomination of a group, possibly including the nominator
Category: Educational Material - Promotional Materials
The Forest Owners Field Day was an out-in-the-woods educational event sponsored jointly by the University of Idaho and Washington State University (plus additional cosponsors), aimed to serve family forest landowners and those who work with them. The purpose was to 1) increase understanding in fundamental management techniques and emerging issues, and 2) to unite attendees with products and services that will help them achieve their management objectives. The location and educational content focused on water resource protection of the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie aquifer, the most critical water source service the Coeur d'Alene-Spokane metro area. Forty-four instructors and volunteers engaged 310 participants, making this the largest organized educational event for the multi-state endeavor. Informational brochures were directly mailed to 25,000 owners. Forest stewardship information was programmed and delivered to both youth and adults. Mobility assistance was provided. Evaluations indicated that 80% of attendees were new to Extension events; 90% executed two or more new practices learned at the field day, and nearly 100% have recommended this event to family, friends, and neighbors. Multi-state events are possible and even fun, and leverage limited resources to serve greater audiences.
