Sustainable forestry: A guide for Virginia forest landowners

Sustainable forestry: A guide for Virginia forest landowners is a joint project between Virginia Cooperative Extension's Forest Landowner Education Program and the Virginia Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) State Implementation Committee (SIC). The publication is designed as a tool for non-industrial private landowners, both new and experienced, to use. Sustainable forestry is handed out to over 1000 forest landowners in Virginia by SFI SIC member companies. In addition, copies are distributed to participants in forestry Extension programs, real estate professionals, and the general public.

This publication is based on the SFI Standard and is hence updated every 5 years, as the Standard changes. The most recent update was completed in 2010. This update included major revisions to the layout and content, essentially rendering it a new publication. An insert: Resources for sustainable forestry, was developed to be distributed along with the main publication. We decided to print the resources as an insert since most of the resources are web-based and hence subject to frequent changes. The insert format allows us to keep the resource information updated as necessary without having to reprint the full 16 page Sustainable Forests publication.

Sustainable Forestry takes landowners through the process of setting goals and objectives for their property with their families. Examples of different goals and objectives to reach those goals are discussed. Additionally, information on Best Management Practices, finding a logger, protecting rare and endangered species and special sites, and land protection is presented.

A unique aspect of this publication is the partnership between forest industry and Extension in Virginia. The Virginia Forest Landowner Education Program and the SHARP Logger Program both serve as the main outreach tool for the Virginia SFI SIC.
