Manatee Adaptations
Type: Nomination of a group, possibly including the nominator
Category: Educational Material - Computerized Graphic Presentation
This PowerPoint presentation was developed as Lesson 3 of an 18-lesson manatee curriculum designed for 3rd grade classes in Florida. The entire curriculum is designed to give students an increased knowledge about manatees, the threats they face, and the ways that people can help protect manatees. It addresses Florida state standards in language arts, math, social studies and science. The curriculum is available through the agent's website (http://stjohns.ifas.ufl.edu/Sea/3rd_grade_curriculum.html) and this PowerPoint was downloaded 1435 times between May and December 2010. Third grade teachers at an elementary school in Palm Coast, FL are piloting the curriculum, with resources provided to the teachers by Dr. Floyd through a grant from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. We have developed a SurveyMonkey survey to gather evaluation data from these 12 teachers at the end of the 2010-11 school year. So far, verbal feedback from the teachers has been good. The teachers will be sharing the curriculum materials with their students' families during the school curriculum night in May. Teachers at an elementary school in an adjacent county will be adopting the curriculum in the 2011-12 school year. Drs McGuire and Floyd are starting a 4th grade curriculum that will focus on right whales.
